Sutik (Judy) Googoo, a Mi’kmaw Elder from Wagmatcook First Nation, is a cultural knowledge keeper and advocate for land-based learning. Immersed in the language and traditions of her people from an early age, Judy has built a life dedicated to sharing and preserving Mi’kmaw culture.
Through her workshops, Judy teaches a wide range of traditional skills, including medicinal plant use, drum-making, moose hide tanning, and other ancestral practices. She also shares her expertise in hunting, trapping, fishing, and sustainable harvesting, offering lessons that connect participants with the land while emphasizing environmental stewardship and conservation.
An accomplished artisan, Judy creates baskets, masks, moccasins, and drums, each piece reflecting the richness of Mi’kmaw heritage. Her shop at First Chief Trading Post in Wagmatcook serves as both a studio and a space for community engagement. Alongside her artistic endeavors, Judy offers barbering services at her home studio, adding another layer of connection to her community.
Judy’s dedication extends to fostering traditional ecological knowledge, guiding others in understanding Mi’kmaw approaches to land and water guardianship. Her teachings highlight the importance of living in harmony with the natural world while respecting the stories and values of her ancestors.
“I grew up with the language and the culture, on the land. This is who I am.” – Judy
