More about Heather:
Heather Stevens is a Mi’kmaw artist and cultural advocate from Millbrook First Nation. Known for her intricate quillwork and distinctive beadwork, Heather draws on generations of Mi’kmaw craftsmanship while adding her personal touches to every piece. Her creations honor the ancient traditions of Mi’kmaq art, ensuring these practices are preserved and celebrated in modern contexts.
Heather’s journey began with observation, learning from other crafters and reaching out to mentors for guidance. Over time, she developed her own style, characterized by subtle details and unique design elements that reflect her individuality. She embraces quality and creativity over mass production, valuing the joy and authenticity of handmade art.
Beyond her artistry, Heather plays a pivotal role in cultural preservation as the manager of the Millbrook Cultural and Heritage Centre. Her leadership contributed to the historic repatriation of Mi’kmaw regalia from the Australian Museum, a milestone in reclaiming Mi’kmaq cultural heritage. Heather’s commitment to her community and culture has been nationally recognized, reflecting her dedication to protecting Mi’kmaq identity and history.
Heather’s work is available at the Millbrook Cultural and Heritage Centre, where she also facilitates workshops to share her skills and knowledge with others. Through her crafts and her work in cultural heritage, Heather inspires others to appreciate and uphold Mi’kmaw traditions.
“I always put something odd or misplaced in my work to show that it is made by me. I want my crafts to look original so they’re not labeled just like all the rest,” – Heather
