Clifford Paul, of Membertou First Nation, is a Mi’kmaw artisan, storyteller, and environmental steward. Founder of Bear Man Authentics, Clifford is known for his handcrafted necklaces, made with precision and care. His work reflects traditional Mi’kmaw craftsmanship blended with modern techniques, each piece carrying cultural stories and personal connections.
Raised in Membertou, Clifford was instilled with a strong work ethic by his father, who taught him to always put his best into every creation because “your name is attached to your work.” This lesson resonates in Clifford’s commitment to quality and the unique techniques he has developed over more than a decade in business. His journey began with a chance encounter learning to extend a bear tooth necklace and has since grown into a thriving enterprise. A skilled artisan, Clifford creates custom jewelry using traditional and contemporary materials, offering necklace-making workshops that connect participants with Mi’kmaw artistic traditions. As a writer, photographer, and former editor of a historical newspaper, Clifford captures and shares the stories and teachings of his people. He is also working on a book of short stories that reflect his deep connection to Mi’kmaw culture.
Bear Man Authentics primarily produces leather-cord necklaces featuring pendants of fused glass, bone, and traditional symbols like Inukshuks and turtles. Clifford’s designs are distinguished by their craftsmanship and adjustable features. His products are sold at powwows, mawiomis, craft shows, and conferences, where he builds relationships with customers through shared stories and cultural exchanges.
In addition to his artistry, Clifford is deeply engaged in land stewardship and conservation through his work with the Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources (UINR). Clifford’s commitment to education is evident in his dynamic presentations, which cover topics such as Two-Eyed Seeing, resource management, food security, and Indigenous perceptions training. As an archery coach and youth mentor, he integrates traditional skills with modern recreational activities, inspiring the next generation to engage with Mi’kmaw traditions.
From guiding ecotourism experiences to sharing cultural teachings at powwows and gatherings, his efforts bring Mi’kmaw knowledge and values to the forefront.
