Chelsea Potter, of L’sitkuk First Nation (Bear River), Nova Scotia, is a self-taught Mi’kmaw artisan and cultural knowledge keeper. Through her business, T+J Krafts, Chelsea creates beaded earrings, pins, keychains, necklaces, moccasins, ribbon shirts and skirts, medicine bags, and dreamcatchers. Her sewing and beading designs reflect a deep connection to Mi’kmaw traditions, blending contemporary artistry with cultural storytelling.
Chelsea incorporates elements of Mi’kmaw cultural knowledge into her work, drawing on traditional skills, prayers, and ceremony. Her connection with her grandmother and other relatives who have passed inspires her craft, imbuing her creations with personal meaning and cultural significance.
In addition to creating handmade items, Chelsea is dedicated to sharing her knowledge through workshops and educational events. She also integrates land-based practices such as hunting, fishing, and using traditional medicines, further grounding her work in the traditions of her ancestors.
“Not everyone beads or sews, but through these practices, I connect with my heritage and share that connection with others.” – Chelsea
