How We Thrive | Listening to our Mi’kmaw neighbours
Ella Nicholas, known by her spirit name Golden Eagle Woman, is a Mi’kmaw leader and the Tourism Coordinator for the Skye River Trail in We’koqma’q First Nation. Deeply committed to cultural preservation and community healing, Ella dedicates her work to fostering understanding and respect for Mi’kmaw traditions.
Ella organizes cultural events and ceremonies, including traditional naming ceremonies and Grandmother Moon ceremonies. Her efforts reintroduce these vital practices to her community, offering opportunities for reflection, connection, and cultural awareness. She describes her learning journey as one shaped by a diverse group of knowledge keepers and cultural experts, whose guidance has enriched her work.
One of Ella’s signature achievements is her leadership of the ila’latl Healing Forest project. This sacred space, part of the National Healing Forests network, honors residential school victims and survivors while providing a sanctuary for education and healing. Ella’s efforts have made the Skye River Trail a place of profound cultural and spiritual importance.
Together with her sister, Eva Nicholas, Ella co-organizes the We’koqma’q Summer Festival, an annual celebration of Mi’kmaw heritage. This festival strengthens community bonds and showcases the vibrancy of Mi’kmaw traditions.
Ella is also passionate about cross-cultural dialogue, engaging neighboring communities to promote mutual understanding and respect for Mi’kmaw perspectives. Her work bridges cultures and generations, making her an inspiring figure in the revitalization of Mi’kmaw heritage.
“I have gained my skills from a diverse group of knowledge keepers and cultural experts, each of whom brings unique talents to our traditional and cultural team,” Ella shares.
